SPECIAL PROJECTS at AAF: ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
South African artist and visual activist Zanele Muholi, known for their nomadic approach, often creates work in response to their immediate environment while traveling. Muholi’s iconic Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness) series features self-portraits produced alone in hotel rooms, with hairstyles, costumes, and sets created ad-hoc from available objects and materials. These works document and envision self-embodiment, existing through the immediacy of the medium. What Muholi produces in Aspen will depend on interactions with the local art community, their response to the natural landscape, and their first-hand experiences. Muholi’s practice continues wherever they are, frequently addressing issues faced by the queer community in that locale.   Concurrent to the Aspen Art Fair Residency, Muholi's work is the subject of two major museum exhibitions on view at the Tate Modern in London and SFMOMA in San Francisco.

Crystalle Lacouture
presents 'House Jewelry', a cascade of wood, silver, beads, and bells inspired by Colorado’s 19th-century Silver Boom and the aspen trees the area is so famous for. The installation, which can only be viewed at Hotel Jerome, is also a cheeky wink at the hotel’s haunted history and is a unique sensory experience for all who view it.

Art Crush Auction for The Aspen Art Musem
The museum’s auction partner, Christie’s, will be conducting two auctions—the first taking place live during the auction and will be led by Adrien Meyer, Global Head of Private Sales and Co-Chairman of Impressionist & Modern Art, and the second taking place on the Christie’s website.

All the works have been generously donated to the museum by artists and galleries in support of the Museum’s artistic and educational programs. To celebrate 45 years since the founding of the Aspen Art Museum by artists, the Museum is inviting artists to retain a percentage of the value of their works. The annual ArtCrush gala will feature a Live Auction of exceptional works by world-renowned artists led by Adrien Meyer, Global Head of Private Sales and Co-Chairman of Impressionist & Modern Art at Christie’s. Bidding on Live Auction work takes place at the ArtCrush gala on Friday, August 2nd, at 8pm MT. Absentee and telephone bidding available.

In the Live Auction, there is no Buyer’s Premium and the difference between the mid-estimate and the winning bid is a tax deductible donation to the museum.
In the Online Auction, a Buyer’s Premium will be applied and the amount of the winning bid in excess of the mid-estimate, including a portion of the buyer’s premium, is a tax deductible donation to the museum.

Online Auction lots will be on view at the Aspen Art Museum through August 3, with Live Auction lots on view through August 1.
